Super Groover Thursday - The Fight / Golden Girls - Part 1

• July 8th, 2009

Well, old pals can't always get along.

In this classic episode of Super Groover Thursday, Freddy Funkbone and Sammy Sweetsocks piss each other off and come to blows.  But don't worry folks, by "blows" I mean fisticuffs and in no way am I referring to oral relations of any kind.  You also need not worry as I think you'll be pleased in the end.

This half of the show starts of with Cheech taking a piss and careens out of control from there!  Curtis Mayfield, Billy Preston, St. Germain and even Miss Piggy make appearances.  Don't miss it!

Jackson 5 Mix - Remembering little Michael

• July 8th, 2009

While I do like Michael's solo stuff and it certainly provided a soundtrack for various points in my life, it's The Jackson 5 that hits me where it (musically) hurts.  So...I thought I'd throw together some of my favourite tracks from my Jackson 5 boxed set.  Triumpantly (or perhaps sadly) I have most of this stuff on vinyl (including the Jermaine solo track) but the CD's are a lot quicker to deal with for this whole podcasting thing.

I found myself leaning toward the ballads, as I think young Michael's voice really shines in these tracks, but I made sure to include a good mix of upbeat tracks as well because The J5 were pretty damn good at making you shake your ass.

For the most part, the hits have been avoided as I'm sure you've all heard ABC and The Love You Save enough times over the past couple of weeks.

Sit back and enjoy Michael and his brothers do their thing!

The tracks are as follows:

Who's Lovin' You - If you watched the memorial yesterday this is the track that Berry Gordon was talking about, mentioning that Michael smoked Smokey Robinson's version.  Recorded in mid-July of 1969, Michael was a month shy of 11 years old when he laid down this impassioned vocal performance.

Ain't Nothin' Like the Real Thing

Mama's Pearl

It's Your Thing - A cover of the Isley Brothers classic, recorded Aug. 7, 1970.

Get it Together - One of my favourite tracks from my favourite "boogie down" Jackson's album.  That album...Dancing Machine.

I'll Bet You - Low down, funky...I'll bet you love it.

I Wanna Be Where You Are - Michael takes the lead from start to finish...

Sugar Daddy - Michael and Jermaine trade leads.  One of my favourite J5 tracks.  What it is, what it is...

That's How Love Goes - Ok...so this if from Jermaine's 1972 solo debut.  This is my podcast and I'll do whatever the hell I want.

You Made Me What I Am - Included almost exclusively for the Doo Doo Doo Doo's.

Reach Out I'll Be There - You know this track from The Four Tops but the J5's take on this Holland/Dozier/Holland penned classic stands up!

Maybe Tomorrow - The biggest hit included in this set.  I couldn't help but include this track that reached #3 in the R&B charts in 1971.  Michael shines!

I Am Love Pts. 1 & 2 - Taken from 1974's Dancing Machine this is a bit of a departure from the dance tracks that make up most of the disc.  I hope you make it all the way to the end because the last track is a killer.

A Fool For You - Recorded when Michael was 11 years old, I think this Ray Charles cover is one of the best examples that Michael had that "something" from a very tender age.  Call it "soul"...call it whatever you want...it sounds great.

New Music (to me)

• November 27th, 2008

Here's a bunch of tracks from cd's that I've purchased recently.  I put these up partially because it's what I've been listening to lately but mostly because these were the cd's that were sitting in a pile on my coffee table (You gotta love all the thought and effort I'm putting into this, eh?).

A few of the tracks are from mojo magazine compilations (though I'm just now realizing that I neglected to include anything from a recent disc with cool covers of White Album tunes).  I highly recommend this magazine as they do an excellent job covering both new and old artists/albums and you get a CD with every issue.  It's expensive as it's imported from the UK but well worth it.  Teddy Thompson (4th track in this mix...I think) is an artist that I discovered from an article in Mojo.

The tracks:

kevin ayers - baby come home

albert hammond jr. - borrowed time

the action 13 - more bread to the people

teddy thompson - what's this_!!

martha wainwright - tower of song

dr. dog - from

the sonics- keep a knockin'

johnny and the uncalled four - shortnin' bread

black lips - boomerang

meaghan smith - i know

ben harper - heart of matters

islands - the arm

the clash - complete control

jt nero - how it runs
